‘Ottawa’ Abdi Death: Paramedics Responded in 5 Minutes
Paramedics arrived on Hilda Street to treat a dying Abdirahman Abdi five minutes and 24 seconds after being dispatched, according to response times obtained by Postmedia.
Abdi, 37, was pronounced dead in hospital Monday after an altercation with police Sunday morning on the front steps of his Hintonburg apartment building.
The Special Investigations Unit, which is now probing whether police are criminally liable for Abdi’s death, has said that Ottawa police officers were called to a Hintonburg coffee shop around 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Police received multiple 911 calls reporting that Abdi was groping women at the neighbourhood Bridgehead.
Ottawa police Chief Charles Bordeleau has said that officers radioed for paramedics within 23 seconds of Abdi needing medical assistance. However, he did not say when, exactly, that call was made. He also said that police conveyed the priority of the call to paramedics.
