‘Ottawa’ Lawyer Says Jail Didn’t Notify Her After Mentally ill Client Hanged Himself
As the family of Justin St-Amour watches him clung to life in a hospital intensive care unit after a suicide attempt in his segregation cell, there was one more person waiting for answers from the Ottawa jail: his lawyer.
Karin Stein said she only found out that her client, who is mentally ill, was hospitalized after hanging himself with a bed sheet last Wednesday when the Citizen called her on Monday.
“I am shocked no one (from the jail) told me,” said Stein, who has represented St-Amour for about five years.
“It would have been nice to know that this had happened.”
St-Amour was arrested on Nov. 22 after he allegedly uttered a threat and breached his probation. He still has court appearances scheduled for Thursday and Dec. 12, Stein said.
