Ottawa RedBlacks have eye on Owens
Just because the NHL held its inaugural Hockeyville USA festivities in Johnstown, Pa., the home of the movie “Slapshot” last week, doesn’t mean it wants the league digressing into a chaotic scene from the cult hockey flick.
On that front, those in charge of slapping a historic 41-game suspension on San Jose Sharks forward Raffi Torres Monday afternoon should be applauded.
While not being fitted for a Hanson Brothers or Ogie Oglethorpe jersey quite yet, Torres has accrued quite the laundry list of reckless actions over his 703-game career, a cache of indiscretions the NHL could no longer tolerate.
Nor should it.
Of course, as is normally the case, there are a few protesters, albeit in the minority, who are crying foul that the league has banished the Sharks forward for exactly half of the 2015-16 regular season because of his hit on Anaheim Ducks forward Jakob Silfverberg Saturday, one that was ruled both as interference and as a check to the head.
