Late-night shooting on Rideau Street injures one
A shooting in downtown Ottawa on Sunday night injured one man and had police descending on the area near the Rideau Centre shopping mall.
Police said the victim, a 59-year-old man, was sent to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. They would not reveal further details about the victim.
The shooting happened around 10:20 p.m. on Rideau Street — not at the mall, police stressed.
Within minutes of the shooting, police and emergency vehicles were filling up the block. The street was blocked off between Sussex Drive and Dalhousie Street, and yellow police tape was put up, as patrons of the Rideau Street McDonald’s and other restaurants looked on.
The commotion on the last weekend before Christmas came hours after police tackled and arrested a man at the another city mall, the Billings Bridge shopping centre, who they said was carrying a gun and accosting people.
