Blue Jays looking at division crown with playoffs a near certainty
With a playoff appearance a near certainty, the prize most coveted by the Jays is the AL East crown and not the lesser reward of a wild-card appearance, even if said game would be a home affair.
However, to get to the top of the proverbial mountain, the Jays have the most onerous task in store — they have to figure out a way to beat the Tampa Bay Rays, a feat that has proved to be elusive over the past number of campaigns.
Last year the Jays emerged with a winning record by going 11-8 against the Rays, the first time in eight seasons they’ve produced a positive result over their fellow dome team.
Heading into last night’s game, the Jays were 5-8 against the Rays this season.
If, at the start of the season, the Jays could have picked one team NOT to play late in September, it would be Tampa Bay. But as it turns out, of their final 10 games, six are against the Rays.
If the Jays go on to win the division crown, they will have earned it.
