Maple Leafs’ Clune brings energy
As a recovering alcoholic, Rich Clune knows all about receiving a new lease on life.
And now, it appears his climb back, both personally and professionally, has reached new heights.
The rugged forward signed a one-year deal with the Leafs on Thursday, one that will net him $675,000 in the NHL and $275,000 if he is returned to the AHL.
Clune recorded five points in eight games with the Marlies this season along with 18 penalty minutes. While he racked up 181 penalty minutes with AHL Milwaukee last season and 166 with Nashville the previous season, he said he brings more to the table than just a pugilist who drops the gloves.
“Why do I need fighting when I box twice a week?” Clune said Thursday. “When I got sober, I made up my mind to learn new things. I wanted to learn to box. That was about five years ago,” he said.
“Boxing is an art. It’s not about the biggest guy or anything like that. Look at Floyd Mayweather. He’s a genius.”
