Review of Ontario’s home care system needed: Auditor general
Almost 30% of the $2.4 billion spent annually on providing home care to Ontarians goes to administration and overhead, Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk says.
Another 10% of the budget is spent on care co-ordination, an important activity but not face-to-face treatment, Lysyk said.
“The person on the street would want to know how much service am I getting myself, how am I being treated,” Lysyk said. “It’s time to take a look and determine what is the right percentage that should be attributable to patient treatment in the whole service delivery model that’s there.”
The auditors found that Ontarians got different levels of service depending on where they lived and even different treatments for similar ailments.
The CCACs are supposed to offer a home visit by a nurse to complex-needs patients within 24 hours of being discharged from hospital.
