Mellos Diner’s charm will stay, landlord says
The “character” of Mellos, including the iconic sign outside, is expected to be preserved when the historic diner’s lease runs out and a neighbouring restaurant takes over, the building’s landlord says.
Public outcry was loud and swift when Mellos announced this week it was being forced to close Dec. 31 after 73 years at its Byward Market location because the landlord, Domicile Commercial Management Inc., wouldn’t extend the lease and was allowing the upscale next-door restaurant, Ace Mercado, to expand into the space.
