NDP gov’t would ban MPs from earning speaking fees
VANCOUVER — If the NDP forms the next government, it will move to ban MPs from collecting speaking fees, Postmedia Network has learned.
NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair will release his party’s full platform Friday and that document will include a commitment to make what Justin Trudeau did during his first years as an MP — charge groups, including charities, hundreds of thousands of dollars in speaking fees — an illegal activity.
Other than Trudeau, only two other MPs from the last Parliament declared income from speaking fees and both were Liberals.
Marc Garneau, seeking re-election in a Montreal riding, collected a $10,000 speaking fee while he was an MP, but his office said it was for an engagement he committed to before he was elected.
