Takes team effort to spring Williams on RedBlacks special teams
It’s not like Chris Williams is a stranger to the end zone; as the CFL’s third-leading receiver (even with a couple of games missed), with 1,044 yards on 73 receptions, he’s been huge for the Ottawa RedBlacks offence and has scored three touchdowns.
But it’s surprising that the 5-foot-9, 155 lb., Williams, who was paid more than $200,000 to catch passes and return punts this season, hasn’t scored a special teams touchdown. In Hamilton in 2012, Williams took five punt returns to the house. But as fast and elusive as he can be, no such luck in Ottawa for a team that hasn’t had a punt or kickoff return for a touchdown — not even close, really — in all of its regular-season existence. Saving you the math, that’s 33 games.
Really, it boils down a four-letter world: Team. The RedBlacks just haven’t been able to put together that co-ordinated effort it takes to spring a returner into open field. It just hasn’t happened.
