Weekend roundup: What to do in Ottawa + Home Reno Show giveaway
So, it’s cold. You’ve probably already discussed this around the water cooler today – there’s nothing like weather to get people riled up. So change the conversation and talk about your weekend plans – the city is hopping this weekend!
Chinatown Remixed, that summertime street festival, has joined up with the Museum of Nature this Friday for one of the Nature Nocturne events. They’ll have life-sized board games, bubble tea, live art and of course, karaoke with China Doll. They’ll also have the usual dance parties throughout the museum.
It’s also the weekend for the Human Library, where you can ‘check out’ interesting people from around the city. Want to learn about what it’s like to be a video journalist? a taxi driver? a war vet? an anarchist? All of these and more will be on hand for you to chat with them one-on-one for 20 minutes.
Venus Envy celebrates its 13th anniversary in Ottawa with Get Lucky, a party down at Babylon on Friday night. Prizes, DJs, photobooths – they’ll have it all.
In the music world, Her Harbour and Esmerine are out at the Black Sheep on Friday night. Freelove Fenner is down from Montreal that night, with their poppy sounds rounded out by the Grime Kings at Cafe Alt. Blues locals MonkeyJunk is back on Saturday, while you can catch maritimers Penny Blacks and Brett MacLean at Raw Sugar. We’ve also got some live jazz, a throwback to the Beatles, and some metal happening this weekend.
For theatre-goers, 9th Hour has a new production out called Grain of Salt, while Detroit continues down at the Gladstone.
Looking to spruce up your digs? The Home Renovation Show is back this weekend, with all sorts of ideas. We’re giving away five pairs of tickets courtesy Ottawa General Contractors. Just send an email to apartment613 [at] gmail.com with “Home Reno Show” in the subject line by Friday at noon, and you’ll be entered in the draw.
If you want to go global this weekend, you’re in luck. We’ve got Vietnamese New Year celebrations, a Venetian carnival, and a fundraiser for Tanzanian health programs happening.
